PREVENTIVE DISCIPLINE TECHNIQUES

The first step in effective discipline is preventing problems from occurring.  Research has shown that teachers do not differ greatly in how they respond after problems occur.  The major difference is in the preventive strategies.  “Preventive discipline” is essentially positive discipline. All discipline steps are based upon a continuum from mild to severe. The following preventive techniques and others will be used in an effort to maintain a positive attitude in both students and teachers.

Preventive Discipline:

The teacher will utilize positive preventive strategies in the classroom to promote good behavior.  Examples include:

Charms,  Behavior Bracelets, Task Board, Room Arrangement, Visual Schedules, Agendas

Teacher Proximity and Contact:

Daily Communication Folder, Kinvolved, Parent Contact by Phone, Parent Conference

Charms:

Each student will receive a chain at the beginning of the school year or when a new student enrolls. If the chain is lost, broken, or full, the student may purchase one in the office for $.50.  Small tokens (Charms) will be given to acknowledge positive behavior and will be placed on the chain. The student will be responsible for keeping up with his or her chain.

●       Monthly Motivators – The Principal, Asst. Principal and Counselor will give students (Charms) if/when “caught” demonstrating positive behavior.

●       Monthly Perfect Attendance- student receives a charm for perfect attendance and Character Kids will receive a charm, certificate, pencil and a goodie bag

Sunshine Box:

Teachers will place students’ names in a grade level sunshine box when the student is caught making good choices. At the end of the month, “goodie bags” will be distributed to the students whose names are pulled out of the sunshine box.

Verbal Warning:

The teacher shall give a verbal warning when behavior begins to escalate.  This warning is documented.

Isolation / Removal from The Group:

The student shall be moved to another area of the classroom, into another teacher’s classroom for a specified amount of time, not to exceed one class period.  Students may NOT be placed in the hall.

Parent Notification:

Step 1 / Written: The teacher shall document the incident and send a written note home to the parents specifying the behavior and the measures taken thus far to correct the behavior.

Step 2 / Phone Call: The teacher shall document the incident and place a phone call to the parents specifying the behavior and the measures taken thus far to correct the behavior.

Referral to Office:

●       The teacher must escort the student to the office and present the appropriate form to the administrator documenting the steps taken prior to the referral.

●        Parent / Teacher / Administrator Conference

●       The meeting shall be scheduled by the teacher.  Minutes will be kept from the meeting, and a copy will be provided for the parents.
